The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) was established in 1873 to provide law enforcement in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

The NWMP was tasked with bringing law and order to the territory, which was then largely populated by Indigenous peoples.

The force was initially made up of 150 men from Ontario, Quebec, and other parts of Canada, who were led by Commissioner George Arthur French.

The NWMP set up a base in Fort Macleod, Alberta, and established posts in places such as Fort Whoop-Up and Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan.

By 1876, the NWMP had more than 500 members and had extended their reach into Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.

In 1920, the NWMP was renamed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and tasked with enforcing federal laws across Canada.

The RCMP is still active today, and is responsible for law enforcement in all provinces and territories as well as a number of federal laws.
