Beginning of World War I: The 20th century

World War I began on July 28, 1914, when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia in response to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

This conflict quickly escalated into a global war, as other nations began to join either the Allied Powers or the Central Powers.

The Allied Powers were comprised of France, Great Britain, Russia, Japan, Italy, and the United States, while the Central Powers were made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire.

World War I was the first major conflict to see the use of new technologies, such as tanks, airplanes, and chemical weapons.

It was also the first conflict to see mass mobilization of troops on an unprecedented scale, as millions of soldiers were sent to fight on the frontlines.

The war was fought mainly in Europe, with battles taking place in France, Belgium, and other areas.

The war lasted for over four years, ending on November 11, 1918, with the signing of the armistice.
