Biography, UK, Prime Minister, Arthur Balfour (1902 to 1905)
Arthur Balfour was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1902 to 1905.
He was a British statesman and Conservative politician who was known for his philosophical outlook.
Balfour was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, and was a Member of Parliament from 1874 to 1922.
He held several senior positions in the Conservative Government, including Chief Secretary for Ireland, Secretary of State for Scotland, Foreign Secretary and First Lord of the Treasury.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, he was responsible for the 1902 Education Act, which introduced free elementary education in the UK.
He is best known for issuing the Balfour Declaration in 1917, which declared British support for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
Balfour was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1937 for his role in the League of Nations and for his efforts to bring about peace in Europe.
