Biography, UK, Prime Minister, Augustus Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Grafton (1768 to 1770)
Augustus Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Grafton, was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1768 to 1770.
He was the only son of Charles Fitzroy, 2nd Duke of Grafton, and Lady Henrietta Somerset, daughter of Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset.
His political career began in 1756 when he was elected as member of parliament for Bury St Edmunds.
In 1765, he was appointed Lord Privy Seal and First Lord of the Treasury, and was made a member of the Privy Council.
As Prime Minister, he oversaw the passage of the 1769 Townshend Revenue Act, which imposed taxes on the colonies of the British Empire.
He also pushed for the repeal of the 1766 Stamp Act, which had been imposed on the colonies to raise revenue for the British government.
After his resignation as Prime Minister, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1772.
