Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (1730-1782) was a British Whig statesman and a Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1765-1766 and 1782.
He was born in England and educated at St John's College, Cambridge.
He was a successful politician and was appointed Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1765 and 1766.
He was a strong advocate for colonial autonomy and a strong opponent of taxation without representation.
He was also in favour of free trade and the abolition of the African slave trade.
Rockingham's politics were based on a desire to reduce the power of the monarchy, promote trade and commerce, and to support the American colonies in their struggle for independence.
Rockingham was a key figure in the repeal of the Stamp Act and was instrumental in the passage of the Declaratory Act of 1766.
