Biography, UK, Prime Minister, Edward Smith to Stanley, Earl of Derby (1852, 1858 to 1859, 1866 to 1868)

Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, was a British statesman and Prime Minister who served three terms as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1852, 1858 to 1859, and 1866 to 1868.

He was born in Knowsley Hall in Lancashire, England, in 1799 and was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford.

He entered politics in 1820 as a member of the Conservative Party, becoming Secretary for War and the Colonies in 1841 and Leader of the House of Commons in 1844.

He was appointed Prime Minister for the first time in 1852 and again in 1858, but was forced to resign in 1859 due to a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons.

After a brief period out of politics, he returned as Prime Minister in 1866, when he led the country to victory in the Austro-Prussian War.

He was also responsible for the passage of several important pieces of legislation, including the Second Reform Act and the Public Health Act.
