Biography, UK, Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan (1957 to 1963)
Harold Macmillan was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1957 to 1963.
He was born in 1894 in London and attended Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford.
Macmillan was a Member of Parliament from 1924 to 1964 and held a number of cabinet posts.
He became Prime Minister in 1957 and set about modernising the British economy and society.
He improved relations with the United States and other European countries and helped Britain join the European Common Market in 1961.
Macmillan also increased spending on education and housing, and reduced unemployment.
He resigned in 1963 due to ill health and was succeeded by Alec Douglas-Home.
