James Callaghan was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1976 to 1979.
He was the only Prime Minister of the 20th century to serve in all four great offices of state.
He began his political career in 1945, being elected to the House of Commons as a Labour MP.
Callaghan was appointed Home Secretary in 1964, Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1967, and Foreign Secretary in 1968.
He was Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979, and is the only British Prime Minister to have held all four great offices of the state.
During his time as Prime Minister, he faced economic and industrial difficulties, as well as the Winter of Discontent.
He resigned in 1979 after losing a vote of no confidence.
