Margaret Thatcher was the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, serving from 1979 to 1990.
She was known as a polarising figure due to her conservative, free-market policies which sought to reduce the role of the state in the economy.
She was also an advocate for strong leadership and decisive action, earning her the nickname 'The Iron Lady'.
Thatcher graduated from Oxford University in 1947 with a degree in Chemistry and later qualified as a barrister.
In 1959, she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Finchley, a post she held until 1992.
Thatcher served as Secretary of State for Education and Science before becoming leader of the Conservative Party in 1975.
After leading the Conservatives to victory in 1979, she served three consecutive terms as Prime Minister.
