Robert Gascoyne to Cecil, Marquess of Salisbury was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1885 to 1886, 1886 to 1892 and 1895 to 1902.
He was a member of the Conservative Party and held the titles of 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, Viscount Cranborne and Earl of Salisbury.
He was an active politician, serving under Prime Ministers Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone.
Salisbury was a prominent proponent of protective tariffs, which he believed would increase the economic strength of the UK.
He was also a strong critic of Irish Home Rule and a strong advocate of maintaining the Union.
Salisbury was known for his strong and effective foreign policies. He was a major player in the formation of the Triple Alliance between the United Kingdom, Germany and Austria-Hungary.
He was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the signing of the Treaty of London in 1839, which ended the First Boer War.
