Biography, UK, Prime Minister, Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington (1742 to 1743)

Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1742 to 1743.

He was born in 1673, and was the eldest son of James Compton, 5th Earl of Northampton and his wife Elizabeth.

He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Oxford.

Compton entered the House of Commons in 1701 and became a prominent figure in the Whig government.

He served as Secretary at War from 1714 to 1717, and was appointed First Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1742.

Compton was known for his moderate views, and his tenure as Prime Minister was marked by the successful prosecution of the War of the Austrian Succession.

He was dismissed from office in 1743, and died in 1743.
