Spencer Perceval (1762 - 1812) was a British statesman and Prime Minister from 1809 to 1812.
He was the only British Prime Minister to be assassinated, dying in the House of Commons in 1812.
He was the son of an Irish Earl, educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge.
He trained as a barrister and was elected to Parliament in 1796, becoming Solicitor General in 1802.
He was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1807, and Prime Minister in 1809.
He led Britain during the Napoleonic Wars, and was a strong advocate of peace and free trade.
He proposed the Great Reform Act of 1832, which did not pass in his lifetime, but was later enacted.
