Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle was a British Whig statesman who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1754 to 1756 and from 1757 to 1762.
He was born in Sussex, England in 1693 and attended the Westminster School.
He entered politics in 1715 as a Member of Parliament for East Grinstead and was appointed Secretary of War in 1724.
He was promoted to the position of Lord Privy Seal in 1754 and served as Prime Minister from 1754 to 1756 and from 1757 to 1762.
He was a strong advocate of the Seven Years War and supported Britain's fight against the French.
He was a key figure in the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1766 and supported the American War of Independence.
He was a prominent figure in the politics of the day and was a major supporter of William Pitt the Elder.
