Biography, UK, Prime Minister, William Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire (1756 to 1757)
William Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire, was a British politician and Prime Minister from 1756 to 1757.
He was born in 1720 and came from a prominent aristocratic family.
He was a major landowner in Derbyshire and had a strong presence in the House of Lords.
The Duke of Devonshire was a Whig and held a variety of government posts throughout his career.
He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Secretary of State before ultimately becoming Prime Minister.
During his time in office, he was unsuccessful in his attempt to repeal the Test Act.
He retired from public office in 1762 and was succeeded by his son, William Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington.
