William Cavendish-Bentinck, Duke of Portland, was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1783 to 1809.

He was born in 1738, the son of William Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, and Elizabeth Cavendish.

He served as Prime Minister during the French Revolutionary War, and was a key figure in the formation of the British armed forces.

He was a prominent supporter of the Slave Trade Abolition Act of 1807, which abolished the slave trade in the British Empire.

He was an influential figure in the House of Lords, and was instrumental in the passage of the Act of Union between England and Scotland in 1707.

He was a major proponent of the formation of the Bank of England, and was responsible for the creation of the Board of Control for India in 1784.

He was a skilled diplomat and negotiator, and was able to build strong alliances with many European rulers.
