William Ewart Gladstone was a prominent British Prime Minister, serving from 1868 to 1874, 1880 to 1885, 1886 and 1892 to 1894.

He was a leader of the Liberal Party and a passionate advocate of political reform.

He was known as the 'Grand Old Man', due to his long tenure in office and immense popularity among the British public.

He championed the cause of social reform, introducing a number of significant pieces of legislation including the Third Reform Act in 1884 and the first Factory Act in 1878.

He was a strong advocate of Home Rule for Ireland and his government passed the Second Irish Home Rule Bill in 1893, although it was eventually blocked in the House of Lords.

He also sought to expand British influence overseas, leading the country into wars against Afghanistan, Sudan and Egypt.

He was the first Prime Minister to introduce a budget in 1853 and later introduced a graduated income tax in 1894.
