Biography, UK, Prime Minister, William Petty, Earl of Shelburne (1782 to 1783)

William Petty, 1st Earl of Shelburne, known as the Marquess of Lansdowne from 1751 to 1761, was a British Whig Prime Minister from 1782 to 1783.

He served as Home Secretary from 1763 to 1765 and as Secretary of State for the Southern Department from 1766 to 1768.

He was a Member of Parliament for Wycombe from 1754 to 1761, for Chipping Wycombe from 1768 to 1784, and for Calne from 1784 to 1806.

He became a member of the government of Lord North as Home Secretary in 1763 and was one of the major figures in the government during the American Revolution.

He was responsible for the Peace of Paris in 1783, which ended the American Revolutionary War.

He also was involved in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Paris of 1783, which ended the American Revolutionary War.

He was a strong advocate of parliamentary reform and sought to make Britain more competitive in the global economy.
