Chester A. Arthur (1881 to 1885) was the 21st President of the United States.

He was a member of the Republican Party and was a lawyer before he became president.

He was born in Fairfield, Vermont on October 5, 1829 and died on November 18, 1886.

Arthur was the Vice President when President James Garfield was assassinated in 1881 and became the President afterwards.

He was known for his civil service reform policies, which helped eliminate corruption in federal offices.

He was also known for his support of the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, which set up a merit-based system for appointing government jobs.

He was also a proponent of tariffs to protect American industries.
