Biography, US Presidents, Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953 to 1961)
Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States, serving from 1953 to 1961.
He was a five-star general in the United States Army during World War II and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe.
Eisenhower is best known for launching the Interstate Highway System and for his leadership in the formation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
He also was a major advocate for science and technology, establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Eisenhower was a moderate Republican and he was known for his anti-communist stance and his support of civil rights.
During his Presidency, Eisenhower also oversaw the desegregation of the United States military and pushed for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
After leaving office, Eisenhower enjoyed a period of retirement, during which he wrote several books.
