Biography, US Presidents, Grover Cleveland (1893 to 1897)
Grover Cleveland (1893 to 1897) was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States who served two separate terms.
He was the only president in US history to serve two non-consecutive terms in office.
Cleveland was the leader of the pro-business Bourbon Democrats and opposed political corruption, patronage, and high tariffs.
He held the office during the Panic of 1893, a serious economic depression in the US, and approved the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act.
He supported the gold standard and gained the nickname “Grover the Good".
He also vetoed many bills from the Populist and free silver factions of his own Democratic Party.
His second term was marked by the Pullman Strike, a major nationwide railroad strike, and he was the first president to use federal troops to break a labor dispute.
