Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States, serving from 1929 to 1933.

He was born in West Branch, Iowa, in 1874 and was orphaned at the age of nine.

After graduating from Stanford University in 1895, he became a successful mining engineer and entrepreneur.

Hoover served as Secretary of Commerce under Presidents Harding and Coolidge, and was a major figure in the international relief efforts during World War I.

He was elected President in 1928, as a Republican, and was the first president to be born west of the Mississippi River.

Hoover's presidency was marked by the beginning of the Great Depression, a major economic crisis that lasted until 1933.

He attempted to revive the economy through government spending, economic reforms, and working with business leaders, but these measures were unsuccessful.
