James A. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his death on September 19, 1881.
Prior to his presidency, Garfield served as a Member of the United States House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880.
Garfield was a leader of the Republican Party and was considered one of the most successful Representatives in the House.
Garfield was born in Ohio in 1831 and attended Williams College in Massachusetts.
After completing his education, Garfield returned to Ohio where he became a lawyer, and later a politician.
During his time in Congress, Garfield was a vocal supporter of the Union during the Civil War.
He was also a leader in the Reconstruction period and supported civil rights for African Americans.
