Biography, US Presidents, James Buchanan (1857 to 1861)

James Buchanan (1791-1868) was the 15th President of the United States, serving from 1857 to 1861.

He was born in Pennsylvania and attended Dickinson College before studying law and beginning a successful political career.

In 1821, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for fourteen years.

He was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1834, where he served until 1845.

From 1845 to 1849, he served as President James Polk's Secretary of State.

In 1853, he was appointed as the U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom, where he served until 1856.

After being elected to the U.S. Presidency in 1856, he was unable to effectively address the secession crisis that was leading to the Civil War.
