James K. Polk was the 11th President of the United States and served from 1845 to 1849.

He was a member of the Democratic Party and was the last strong President of the pre-Civil War era.

Polk was a proponent of manifest destiny, the belief that the United States had a divine destiny to expand from coast to coast.

During his term, he oversaw the Mexican-American War, in which the U.S. gained control of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Utah, Colorado, and Nevada.

He was a successful negotiator, settling the Oregon Territory issue with Great Britain.

He was a fiscal conservative and kept the government out of debt.

He was the first President to have his photograph taken while in office.
