Biography, US Presidents, James Madison (1809 to 1817)
James Madison was the 4th President of the United States, serving from 1809 to 1817.
He is known for playing a key role in the creation of the United States Constitution and is often referred to as the "Father of the Constitution".
Prior to his presidency, he was a leader in the Virginia Assembly, a member of the Continental Congress, and the Secretary of State under Thomas Jefferson.
During his presidency, Madison declared war on Britain in 1812, which eventually led to the formation of the United States Navy.
He also helped form the first national bank, and supported the Louisiana Purchase.
Madison is also remembered for creating the first cabinet in the United States, consisting of the departments of War, State, Treasury and Attorney General.
He was a lifelong proponent of religious freedom, and is remembered for his advocacy of the Bill of Rights.
