James Monroe (1758-1831) served as the fifth President of the United States from 1817 to 1825.
Monroe was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and prior to his presidency, served in a variety of political roles, including United States Senator, United States Secretary of State, and United States Minister to France.
He was a key figure in the creation of the Monroe Doctrine, a policy of the United States that warned European powers not to interfere in the affairs of the Americas.
