Martin Van Buren (1782 – 1862) was the 8th President of the United States, serving from 1837 to 1841.

He was the first President to be born a citizen of the United States, making him the first non-British-born President.

Before becoming President, Van Buren served as the 8th Vice President and Secretary of State.

He was the leader of the Democratic Party and his views on the economy and slavery were seen as progressive.

Van Buren was a strong proponent of the concept of states’ rights and was a major advocate of the creation of a national bank.

His presidency was marked by great political and economic upheaval, including the Panic of 1837 and the Trail of Tears.

Van Buren was unsuccessful in his attempt to be re-nominated for a second term and retired to his home in Kinderhook, New York.
