Millard Fillmore was the 13th president of the United States, serving from 1850 to 1853.
A member of the Whig Party, he was the last president not to be affiliated with either the Democratic or Republican parties.
Prior to becoming president, Fillmore served in the House of Representatives and the New York State Senate.
He was best known for his role in the Compromise of 1850, which attempted to resolve the issue of slavery in the United States.
After leaving the presidency, Fillmore was nominated for the presidency by the Know Nothing Party in 1856, but was unsuccessful.
Fillmore was also a strong advocate of the American System, an economic plan that would help the United States become more self-sufficient.
Fillmore was a respected figure in his lifetime, and is still considered one of the most successful presidents in terms of foreign policy.
