Biography, US Presidents, Rutherford B. Hayes (1877 to 1881)

Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881.

He was a Republican who was elected by a single electoral vote in one of the most disputed elections in American history.

Hayes was a major general in the Union Army during the Civil War and was wounded five times.

After the war, Hayes was elected to Congress and later Governor of Ohio.

As president, Hayes focused on civil service reform, economic development, and the protection of civil rights.

He supported the gold standard, vetoed the Bland-Allison Act that would have put more silver in circulation, and promoted civil service reform.

Hayes also had to contend with an economy in depression and the continued presence of Reconstruction in the South.
