Biography, US Presidents, Ulysses S. Grant (1869 to 1877)
Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States, serving two terms from 1869 to 1877.
He was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point.
During the American Civil War, he was a prominent Union General and was known for his successful campaigns against the Confederate forces.
In 1868, he was elected as President on the Republican ticket and was re-elected in 1872.
During his presidency, Grant pushed for Reconstruction, signing the Enforcement Acts, which made it illegal to deny African Americans the right to vote.
He also established the Department of Justice and the Department of Education.
After leaving office, Grant was involved in various business ventures, but ultimately ended up bankrupt.
