Biography, US Presidents, William Howard Taft (1909 to 1913)
William Howard Taft (1857-1930) was the 27th President of the United States from 1909 to 1913.
He studied at Yale University and Cincinnati Law School, before becoming a lawyer in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Taft served as the Secretary of War under President Theodore Roosevelt, before he was elected president in 1908.
As president, Taft supported the passage of the 16th Amendment, which introduced the federal income tax.
He was also responsible for the establishment of the United States Department of Labor.
Taft is the only person to have served as both President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
After his presidency, he served as a professor of constitutional law at Yale Law School.
