William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, serving from 1897 to 1901.

He was the last president to serve in the 19th century and was a Republican Party leader.

He was born on January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio and attended Allegheny College and later the University of Albany Law School.

After graduation, McKinley served in the Civil War and then returned home to practice law.

He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1876 and then as Governor of Ohio in 1891.

As President, McKinley oversaw the Spanish-American War and the annexation of Hawaii.

McKinley was assassinated in 1901, and was succeeded in office by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt.
