Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) was the twelfth President of the United States from 1849 to 1850.

He was a career military officer and a major general in the United States Army.

Taylor was a national war hero and was popularly known as “Old Rough and Ready”.

He entered politics as a Whig in 1846 and was elected to the White House in 1848.

During his presidency, he dealt with the issue of slavery in the west and the Mexican-American War.

In 1850, he died unexpectedly due to severe stomach issues, making his the second shortest serving President (16 months).

He was succeeded by his Vice President, Millard Fillmore.
