In 1016, King Canute the Great of Denmark invaded England and became the first Danish King of England.

He then set about uniting the three separate parts of England, Northumbria, Mercia and Wessex, into one kingdom.

Canute also created a strong and powerful navy to protect the country from Viking raids.

He also introduced a new taxation system and made the country more prosperous.

Canute appointed his own officials to oversee the government and the economy.

He also improved the legal system by introducing the Witan, an assembly of nobles and churchmen who advised the king on important matters.

Canute was a devote Christian and he was able to unite the English Church with the Danish Church.
