CE 122 - Construction of Hadrian's Wall.
Hadrian's Wall was a defensive wall built by the Roman Empire in 122 AD across the width of what is now Northern England.
It stretched from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness on the Solway Firth and was built to protect Roman Britain from invading Picts from the north.
It is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain and is the most popular tourist attraction in the UK.
It is 80 miles (129 km) long and is made of stone and turf, with forts and milecastles along its length.
The wall was built in two parts: the Vallum, a deep ditch and bank along the south side of the wall, and the Wall itself, which was 6–9 feet (1.8–2.7 m) high and made of stone.
It was built by 15,000 legionaries, who were joined by an additional 5,000 auxiliaries.
There were 80 mile-castles and over 1,000 turrets along the wall.
