CE 1666 - The Great Fire of London destroys much of the city.
In September 1666, a great fire broke out in London and lasted for three days.
The fire began in a bakery on Pudding Lane and quickly spread due to high winds.
It destroyed over 13,000 homes and 87 churches, including St Paul’s Cathedral.
About 70,000 of the 80,000 residents of London were left homeless.
In order to prevent future fire disasters, the city was rebuilt with wider streets and buildings made of stone and brick.
In response to the disaster, the Great Fire of London Monument was built in the area.
The Monument is a 202-foot stone column with a gilded urn at the top.
