CE 1854 - The Crimean War is fought against Russia.
The Crimean War was a conflict fought between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, Britain, France, and Sardinia between 1853 and 1856.
The main cause of the war was Russia’s attempt to expand its influence in the Black Sea region and its refusal to accept the political and religious independence of the Ottoman Empire.
On October 25, 1853, the Ottoman Empire declared war on Russia, and in March 1854, Britain and France followed suit.
The war was fought mainly in the Crimean Peninsula, where the Russian forces, despite some successes, were ultimately defeated.
On March 30, 1856, the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the war and restoring the status quo ante bellum.
During the war, both sides suffered heavy losses, particularly in the Battle of Balaclava, which saw one of the most famous cavalry charges in British military history.
The war was also notable for the introduction of the Nurses Registration Act 1855, which enabled nurses to practice medicine and look after the wounded in military hospitals.
