CE 1914 - World War I begins.

CE 1914 - World War I begins.

World War I, also known as the First World War, began in Europe on July 28, 1914 when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

This sparked a series of events leading to a war between the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire) and the Allies (Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, Romania and the United States).

Britain declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914, and the British Expeditionary Force was sent to France in the same month.

By the end of 1914, most of Europe was at war, with battles taking place on the Western, Eastern, Italian and Balkan Fronts.

The war was characterised by the use of new and devastating weapons, including tanks, chemical weapons, submarines and aircraft.

Over nine million soldiers were killed and more than 20 million were wounded during the course of the war.

In 1918, the Allies won the war and the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, marking the end of the war.
