In 1940, the United Kingdom was subjected to eight months of bombing by the German Luftwaffe, known as the Blitz.

During this period, London was bombed for 57 consecutive nights.

On 7 September 1940, the German air force dropped more than 300 tons of bombs on London, causing extensive damage and killing around 3,000 people.

On 10 May 1941, the Luftwaffe launched one of its biggest raids on the city of Coventry, leaving more than 400 dead and thousands homeless.

In the early hours of 14 April 1941, the city of Belfast was bombed by the Germans, killing more than 1,000 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless.

In April and May 1941, the city of Hull was also subjected to several air raids.

On 15 October 1940, the city of Plymouth was heavily bombed by the Germans and more than 300 people were killed.
