CE 802 - The kingdom of Wessex
CE 802 marks the beginning of the Kingdom of Wessex, which ruled over much of present-day England during the 8th and 9th centuries.
The kingdom was established by King Egbert, who was the first to unify many of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the area.
Wessex became one of the most powerful kingdoms in England during this period, with its capital at Winchester.
Wessex was able to repel Viking raids, and eventually defeated the Danes in 878 at the Battle of Edington.
The kingdom of Wessex was ruled by a succession of powerful kings, including Alfred the Great, one of the most famous Anglo-Saxon kings.
Alfred the Great is credited with creating an effective English navy, as well as many reforms to the English legal system.
The kingdom of Wessex was eventually absorbed into the larger kingdom of England in 927, but its legacy of law and order endured.
