CE 866 - The Vikings invade Britain

CE 866 - The Vikings invade Britain

CE 866 marks the beginning of Viking invasions of Britain, when the Great Heathen Army of the Norsemen, led by Ivar the Boneless and Halfdan Ragnarsson, landed in East Anglia.

The Vikings would go on to establish their own settlements in major parts of England, including in the North and East where they eventually founded the Danelaw.

In 878, King Alfred the Great of Wessex was able to make a treaty with the Vikings, establishing their rule over the North and East, with the boundary of their rule being the River Thames.

The Vikings would also settle in Scotland, where they founded the Kingdom of Dublin in 846.

In addition to establishing their own settlements, the Vikings would also raid and plunder numerous settlements in Britain, including monasteries, churches, and towns.

The Viking invasions were a major factor in the political and cultural development of Britain, and led to a mixing of Norse and Anglo-Saxon cultures.

The legacy of the Viking invasions is still evident in Britain today, with many place names and words being derived from Old Norse.
