Carl Benz was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1844.
He was an engineer and inventor who is best known as the creator of the first practical automobile, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen.
He founded the Benz & Cie. motor vehicle company in 1883, which later became the world-renowned Mercedes-Benz.
In 1888, Benz received a German patent for his three-wheeled Motorwagen, which became the first production automobile.
He developed the first four-stroke engine, which is still the standard for most modern engines.
He also invented the first carburetor and the first spark plug.
Benz was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1969.
