Charles Rolls (1877 - 1910) was a pioneering English entrepreneur best known for co-founding Rolls-Royce, the luxury car and aero engine manufacturing company.
Born in 1877, Rolls attended Cambridge University and developed a passion for automobiles which lead to him becoming one of the co-founders of Rolls-Royce in 1904.
In 1906, Rolls became the first Briton to make a non-stop double crossing of the English Channel in a heavier-than-air craft.
He also established the first car hire and sales business in London and in 1909, he opened the first showroom for Rolls-Royce cars.
Rolls was an active promoter of the development of the aviation industry and was a founding member of the Royal Aero Club in 1901.
He was also a member of the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland and held numerous world speed records in cars and aircraft.
In 1910, Rolls tragically died in an aircraft accident while attempting to set a new world record.
