Günter Blobel was born in 1936 in Germany.

He was a European biochemist and entrepreneur who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1999.

Blobel made a breakthrough in discovering that proteins have intrinsic signals that govern their transport and localization in the cell.

He attended medical school at the University of Königsberg, now known as Kaliningrad, Russia.

Blobel completed his post-doctoral training at the Institute of Cell Biology at the Rockefeller University.

Blobel became a professor of biochemistry at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1974.

In 1989, Blobel proposed the signal hypothesis, which states that proteins have signals that determine their locations within the cell.
