Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) was a famous European entrepreneur, best known for his work on the Great Western Railway.
He was born in Portsmouth, England, in 1806 and was the son of Marc Isambard Brunel and Sophia Kingdom.
He was educated at home by his father, who was an inventor and engineer, and later at a private school in Hove.
As a young man, Brunel worked as an assistant engineer on his father's projects, including the Thames Tunnel.
In the 1830s, he began working on the Great Western Railway and was appointed chief engineer in 1833.
He was responsible for the design and construction of bridges, tunnels, and stations along the line, and for the development of the steam locomotive.
Brunel also built several steamships, including the Great Western and the Great Britain, which were the first iron-hulled, screw-propelled vessels.
