Johann Joachim Becher was born in 1635 in Germany.

He was a German scientist and physician who is credited with developing the phlogiston theory of combustion.

Becher is also noted for his contributions to the field of mineralogy, particularly in the study of fossils.

He was the first to coin the term "terra pinguis," which means "fat earth."

Becher was also an early advocate of the use of sugar as an industrial sweetener.

He wrote several books about his theories, including Physica subterranea and Metallographia.

Becher was a member of the Royal Society and the Academie des Sciences.
