1.Louis Blériot (born 1872) was a French aviator and engineer who achieved worldwide fame for being the first person to fly a plane across the English Channel in 1909.
2.He was born in Cambrai, France and worked as an engineer in the automotive industry before building his own planes.
3.In 1906, Blériot opened his own aeronautical workshop and developed the world's first successful monoplane, the Blériot XI.
4.The Blériot XI was the first aircraft to make a public flight in France and the first to win the Michelin Cup.
5.In 1909, Blériot flew his plane across the English Channel, becoming the first person to do so.
6.In the same year, he founded Blériot Aéronautique, an aviation company which produced several successful aircraft designs in the following few years.
7.Blériot continued to fly until his death in 1936, and was awarded with numerous honors for his achievements in aviation.
