History of India, 1700 BC – 500 BC, Vedic Period

The Vedic period of Indian history lasted from 1700 BC to 500 BC and is known as the period of the Rig Veda, the oldest Hindu scripture.

During this period, the Indo-Aryan people migrated to the Indian subcontinent and settled down in the area now known as the Indus Valley.

This period is also known for the development of the Hindu religion, and the emergence of the earliest cities in the Indian subcontinent.

During this period, the caste system was also developed and defined social hierarchy among the people.

Vedic literature, including the Rig Veda, was composed during this period, and this literature showcased the beliefs, values, and culture of the people during this time.

The Vedic period also saw the rise of the Mahajanapadas, or the great monarchies, and the development of the Upanishadic tradition, which was the foundation of Hindu philosophy.

During this period, the use of iron and copper tools was widely seen and this led to the growth of agriculture and increased trade.
