History of India, 1757 AD, Battle of Plassey was fought
The Battle of Plassey was fought in 1757 AD between the forces of the British East India Company led by Robert Clive, and the forces of the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj Ud Daulah.
The British East India Company had been slowly extending its influence in the region since 1600s and were backed by the French.
The Nawab of Bengal, Siraj Ud Daulah, had refused to accept the suzerainty of the British East India Company and had formed an alliance with the French forces in the region.
The battle was fought at a place called Palashi (Plassey) on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, near Murshidabad in Bengal.
The forces of the Nawab of Bengal were outnumbered and outgunned by the British East India Company and were defeated.
This battle marked the beginning of the British rule in India and the end of the Nawab's rule.
The victory at Plassey also enabled the British East India Company to gain control of large parts of India, including Bengal, and eventually gave them control of the entire country.
