History of India, 1777 AD, First Anglo-Maratha War
The First Anglo-Maratha War, also known as the First Maratha War, began in 1777 and lasted until 1782.
The war was fought between the Maratha Confederacy, led by the Peshwa Madhav Rao I, and the British East India Company.
The Marathas were supported by the Nizam of Hyderabad, and by the French East India Company, who supplied them with arms and ammunition.
The British, on the other hand, were supported by the Nizam of Mysore and the Rajputs.
The war began when the British attempted to expand their territories in India and the Marathas resisted their advances.
The Marathas were initially successful in defeating the British forces, but were eventually defeated by the superior firepower of the British.
The Treaty of Salbai was signed in 1782, which ended the First Anglo-Maratha War and ceded the territories of Salsette and Bassein to the British.
